When’s the last time you gave your shower head a good cleaning? If it’s been a while (or never!), you might be surprised how much of a difference it can make. Over time, mineral deposits and buildup can clog the spray nozzles, turning a strong stream into a weak trickle, regardless of the source of your water.
The good news? A quick clean can solve the problem and keep your shower running smoothly. Here’s how to do it.
Cleaning a Shower Head with Vinegar
Vinegar is a great natural alternative to harsh cleaners. Its acidity helps break down mineral buildup, perfect for restoring water flow.
What you’ll need:
Distilled white vinegar
Plastic bag
Rubber band or twist tie
Baking soda
Cloth
Toothbrush or toothpick
Steps:
Fill a plastic bag halfway with vinegar.
Submerge the shower head and secure the bag with a rubber band.
Let it soak for several hours or overnight.
Remove the bag and pour the vinegar down the drain. Add a little baking soda to help freshen the pipes.
Run hot water through the shower to flush out loosened debris.
Use a toothpick or a dry toothbrush with baking soda to gently scrub away any remaining buildup.
Tip: Avoid this method on finishes like gold, brass, chrome, or nickel, as vinegar may damage the coating.
No Vinegar? No Problem.
If you’re out of vinegar, lemon juice, and baking soda can also get the job done.
What you’ll need:
Lemon juice
Baking soda
Toothbrush
Steps:
Mix the lemon juice and baking soda together to form a paste.
Scrub the shower head with the paste using a toothbrush.
Rinse with hot water.
If possible, take the shower head apart to clean the inside.
Rinse everything well and reassemble.
Don’t Forget the Filter Screen
Still seeing low water pressure after cleaning the nozzles? It might be time to clean the filter screen inside the shower head.
What you’ll need:
Wrench
Needle-nose pliers
Vinegar and water (equal parts)
Toothbrush
Steps:
Unscrew the shower head (use a cloth to avoid scratching).
Run warm water through it to remove surface debris.
Remove the small screen with pliers.
Clean the screen with a toothbrush dipped in the vinegar solution.
Rinse thoroughly, dry, and reinstall.
Replace the screen yearly for best results.
Keeping It Clean Long-Term
Don’t wait for the buildup to strike again. Spray your shower head with a vinegar-water mix weekly, scrub gently, and run hot water through it. A little maintenance goes a long way.
Bonus: Clean the Whole Shower
If you’re already cleaning the shower head, why not tackle the rest of the shower too?
For Hard Water Stains:
Spray an equal mixture of vinegar and water onto the stained area.
Let it sit for 15+ minutes.
Scrub and rinse. Repeat if needed.
For the Drain:
Remove and clean the drain cover. Soak it in vinegar if needed.
Use a drain snake to remove hair or buildup.
Rinse with hot water.
For Glass Shower Doors:
Wet the glass.
Spray a mixture of vinegar, water, and a small amount of dish soap.
Let it sit for a few minutes.
Scrub with a sponge or microfiber cloth.
Rinse.
For tough spots, use a baking soda paste.
